A Fuel Cost Calculator tells you exactly how much you will spend on petrol or diesel for any trip, daily commute, or monthly driving pattern — given your vehicle's mileage (km/L), the current fuel price (₹/L), and your distance.

For Indian vehicle owners, fuel is typically the single largest running cost of a car or two-wheeler. With petrol prices above ₹100/L in most Indian cities, even a modest 30 km daily commute costs ₹4,000–6,000 per month in fuel alone. This calculator makes that number precise and visible, so you can:

How to use this Fuel Cost calculator

  1. Enter the trip distance in kilometres. For a daily commute, enter the one-way distance.
  2. Enter your vehicle's mileage in km/L. Use your real-world average (check your trip meter and fuel tank fill-ups over a month for accuracy).
  3. Enter the current fuel price in ₹/L. Check your nearest pump; defaults to ₹103/L (approximate mid-2025 average).
  4. Enter trips per month — for a daily commuter on 22 working days, use 22 (one-way) or 44 (round trips counted individually).

Fuel cost = (Distance ÷ Mileage) × Fuel price per litre. For a 200 km trip in a car with 15 km/L mileage and petrol at ₹103/L: Fuel needed = 200 ÷ 15 = 13.33 L; Cost = 13.33 × 103 = ₹1,373. This is the same formula used by this calculator — enter your trip distance, vehicle mileage (km/L), and current fuel price, and it computes the exact cost instantly.
For petrol cars in India, a mileage of 14–18 km/L is considered good for sedans and hatchbacks. Popular models: Maruti Suzuki Swift gets about 21–23 km/L (ARAI), Hyundai i20 about 20 km/L, Honda City about 17 km/L. SUVs typically return 12–16 km/L. Diesel cars are more fuel-efficient: 20–25 km/L for hatchbacks, 15–20 km/L for SUVs. Real-world mileage is typically 15–25% lower than ARAI certified figures due to traffic, AC use, and driving style.
Petrol and diesel prices in India are revised daily by OMCs (HPCL, BPCL, IOCL) based on international crude prices and rupee-dollar exchange rates. Prices vary by state due to state VAT and local levies. As of mid-2025, petrol prices ranged from approximately ₹94–106/L depending on the city (lower in Andaman, higher in Maharashtra and Kerala). For CNG vehicles, enter your CNG efficiency in km/kg (typically 25–35 km/kg for CNG cars) and enter the CNG price per kg as the 'Fuel Price'. For EVs, the equivalent is electricity cost: enter km per kWh (typically 6–8 km/kWh for EVs) as the 'Mileage', and ₹/kWh (typically ₹8–10/kWh for home charging) as the 'Fuel Price'. This gives you the per-trip electricity cost. For example: Tata Nexon EV at 7 km/kWh, ₹9/kWh: ₹9 ÷ 7 = ₹1.29/km — much lower than petrol vehicles.
