ARAI
EverydayAutomotive Research Association of India
India's premier automotive testing and certification body, responsible for certifying vehicle fuel efficiency (mileage), emissions, and safety standards before market launch.
Definition
ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Government of India, headquartered in Pune. Established in 1966, ARAI is India's premier automotive R&D and testing agency, responsible for:
- Type approval certification โ mandatory testing before any new vehicle model can be sold in India
- Fuel efficiency certification โ the mileage figures manufacturers publish in advertising
- Emissions testing โ compliance with Bharat Stage (BS) norms (currently BS6 Phase 2)
- Safety testing โ crash tests and component safety standards
Key Things to Know
- ARAI figures are for comparison, not prediction. Use them to compare two models, not to predict your monthly fuel bill.
- Measure your own mileage using the full-tank method and the Bike Average Calculator.
- BS6 Phase 2 (OBD2) from 2023 requires real driving emissions (RDE) monitoring โ a step toward bridging the lab-to-road gap.
Related Calculators
Bike Average Calculator โCalculate your bike's mileage in km/l by entering distance and fuel used. Estimate fuel cost per km and total trip fuel expense at current petrol prices.
Fuel Cost Calculator โCalculate petrol or diesel cost for any trip in India. Enter distance, mileage, and fuel price to get exact fuel cost per trip and per month.
Frequently Asked Questions
ARAI mileage is measured under controlled laboratory conditions: constant speed on a chassis dynamometer, no traffic, ideal 25ยฐC temperature, new engine with fresh oil, and optimal tyre pressure. Real-world riding introduces traffic stops, varying speeds, engine warm-up periods, and load โ all of which reduce efficiency. A 10โ20% gap from ARAI figures is completely normal. Yes. All motor vehicles sold in India โ two-wheelers, cars, commercial vehicles โ must obtain ARAI type approval (or equivalent from ICAT, another authorised testing agency) before they can be sold. This includes safety testing, emissions compliance (BS6 norms currently), and fuel efficiency certification. Manufacturers cannot legally sell a vehicle without this certification.
ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India, Pune) and ICAT (International Centre for Automotive Technology, Manesar) are both government-authorised vehicle testing agencies. Both can issue type approval certificates. ARAI is older and more established, associated primarily with SIAM (Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers) members. Many manufacturers use either agency โ both produce valid certifications that must be displayed in advertising.
