Zodiac Animal
What is a Chinese Zodiac?
The Chinese zodiac is a repeating 12-year cycle in which each year is assigned one of twelve animals, Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. The Chinese Zodiac Calculator takes your birth year and instantly returns your zodiac animal, your element (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, or Earth), your Yin or Yang polarity, and a short summary of the personality traits traditionally associated with your sign.
Unlike the Western zodiac, which is based on the month and day of birth, the Chinese zodiac is based entirely on the year of birth, making the Zodiac Sign Calculator and this tool complementary rather than interchangeable. When the twelve animals are combined with the five elements, they form a larger 60-year cycle in Chinese astrology, meaning your exact animal-and-element combination only repeats once every sixty years.
The system has roots in ancient Chinese folklore and continues to shape cultural traditions today, from Lunar New Year celebrations to gift-giving customs and compatibility matchmaking. If you want to compare your animal against someone else's, the Chinese Zodiac Compatibility Calculator picks up exactly where this tool leaves off.
Why Use a Chinese Zodiac Calculator?
Manually working out a Chinese zodiac animal means counting backward or forward through a 12-year cycle from a known reference year, then separately figuring out the element cycle, a process that's easy to get wrong. The calculator handles both steps instantly from a single birth year input.
It's commonly used to quickly identify your own animal sign before reading a Lunar New Year horoscope, to check a family member's or partner's sign ahead of a compatibility comparison, or to settle a debate about which animal governs a specific birth year. Because it also returns the element and yin-yang polarity in the same result, you get the full traditional profile rather than just the animal name, useful preparation before trying the Chinese Zodiac Compatibility Calculator.
Who Should Use This Calculator?
- Anyone celebrating Lunar New Year who wants to confirm which animal year they were born in before reading yearly horoscope predictions.
- Couples and families checking each other's animal signs ahead of a compatibility comparison using the Chinese Zodiac Compatibility Calculator.
- Content creators and educators who need quick, accurate animal-year lookups for horoscope content, classroom material, or social posts.
- Gift-shoppers and event planners looking up a birth-year animal to choose zodiac-themed gifts or Lunar New Year decorations.
- Astrology enthusiasts comparing their Chinese zodiac profile against their Western sun sign from the Zodiac Sign Calculator.
What Insights Does the Chinese Zodiac Calculator Give You?
The calculator returns four pieces of information from a single birth year. Zodiac Animal is the primary result, one of the twelve traditional animals assigned to your birth year, such as Dragon or Ox.
Element identifies which of the five elements (Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, or Earth) governs your specific birth year, adding a layer of nuance beyond the animal alone, for example, a Fire Tiger is considered more assertive than a typical Tiger. Yin / Yang shows whether your birth year carries the active Yang or receptive Yin polarity, a classification that alternates every year. Personality Traits gives a short, traditional description of the characteristics commonly associated with your animal, such as loyalty for the Dog or curiosity for the Monkey.
Together, these four fields give you the same level of detail found in a full Chinese zodiac profile, generated instantly from nothing more than a birth year.

Formula & Methodology
The calculator maps your birth year to one of twelve animals using a fixed cycle anchored to a known reference year:
Animal Index = ((Year mod 12) + 12) mod 12 Element = f(Year mod 10) // last digit maps to one of five elements, two years per element Yin/Yang = Year mod 2 === 0 ? "Yang" : "Yin"
The element is determined by the last digit of the birth year: 0–1 maps to Metal, 2–3 to Water, 4–5 to Wood, 6–7 to Fire, and 8–9 to Earth.
Worked example: For a birth year of 1990, the animal index calculation returns Horse. The last digit (0) maps to Metal, and since 1990 is an even year, the polarity is Yang, giving a full profile of "Metal Yang Horse."Frequently Asked Questions
