Recommended Daily Intake (litres)
What is a Water Intake?
A Water Intake Calculator estimates how much water you should drink in a day based on your body weight, how much you exercise, and the climate you're in. The commonly repeated "drink 8 glasses a day" rule ignores body size entirely, while actual hydration needs scale with weight and increase with physical activity and heat โ two factors this calculator accounts for directly.
This tool applies a widely used general formula โ roughly 33 ml per kilogram of body weight as a baseline, with additions for exercise and hot climates โ to give a more personalised daily target than a one-size-fits-all number. It pairs well with the TDEE Calculator and BMR Calculator for a more complete picture of daily nutritional and hydration needs.
How to use this Water Intake calculator
- Enter your Weight in kilograms.
- Set Exercise / Activity to roughly how many minutes of physical activity you do per day.
- Select your Climate โ Temperate or Hot / Humid โ based on where you currently live or are spending time.
- Read the Recommended Daily Intake result in litres.
- Check the Glasses of Water figure if you prefer to track your intake by glass count through the day.
- Recalculate if your activity level or climate changes significantly, such as during travel or a change in exercise routine.
Formula & Methodology
The calculator combines three components into a single daily target: Base = Weight (kg) ร 33 ml Activity Addition = (Exercise Minutes รท 30) ร 400 ml Climate Addition = 500 ml if Hot/Humid, else 0 Total Intake = Base + Activity Addition + Climate Addition Worked example: for a 70 kg person exercising 30 minutes a day in a temperate climate: - Base = 70 ร 33 = 2,310 ml - Activity Addition = (30 รท 30) ร 400 = 400 ml - Climate Addition = 0 ml - Total = 2,310 + 400 + 0 = 2,710 ml (2.71 L), or about 11 glasses
