What is a VLDL Calculator?
A VLDL Calculator estimates very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol from a single triglycerides value, using the Friedewald-derived relationship VLDL = Triglycerides รท 5. Since VLDL is rarely measured directly on a standard lipid panel, this calculation is the same method labs use to report a VLDL figure alongside total cholesterol, HDL, and LDL.
Because VLDL depends entirely on triglycerides in this formula, this calculator also flags when triglycerides are too high for the estimate to remain reliable, pointing you toward a direct measurement instead.
Why Use a VLDL Calculator?
If your lipid panel lists triglycerides but not VLDL directly, this calculator fills in that gap instantly and places the result in context with commonly cited reference ranges. It's a quick way to see how a triglycerides change, from diet, exercise, or medication, would shift your calculated VLDL.
Because VLDL and LDL are closely linked through the same underlying formula, this calculator pairs naturally with the LDL Calculator for a fuller picture of your lipid panel.
Who Should Use This Calculator?
- Anyone with a lipid panel listing triglycerides who wants to see the corresponding calculated VLDL value.
- People tracking triglyceride changes over time, alongside the LDL Calculator and Cholesterol Ratio Calculator.
- People with elevated triglycerides wanting to understand why VLDL is flagged on a lab report.
- Healthcare and nutrition students studying how lipid panel values relate to one another.
This calculator is for informational and educational purposes only and does not replace a laboratory lipid panel. Always interpret cholesterol and triglyceride results together with a qualified healthcare provider.
What Insights Does the VLDL Calculator Give You?
- VLDL Cholesterol, the primary result, your estimated VLDL level in mg/dL calculated from triglycerides.
- Category, whether that VLDL value falls in a normal, borderline high, or high range, or a caveat if triglycerides are too high for the formula to apply.
Because VLDL is derived directly from triglycerides, this result moves in exact proportion to any triglycerides change, a helpful way to see the practical impact of triglyceride-lowering efforts.
How to use this VLDL Calculator calculator
- Locate your Triglycerides value from a recent lipid panel.
- Enter that value in mg/dL.
- Review the VLDL Cholesterol result and its Category.
- If the high-triglyceride caveat appears, note that a direct VLDL or lipoprotein test is more reliable at that level.
- Compare the result to your lab report's VLDL figure, if listed, and discuss with your healthcare provider.

Formula & Methodology
VLDL Cholesterol (mg/dL) = Triglycerides รท 5 This is the VLDL term used within the Friedewald formula for calculating LDL cholesterol (Friedewald, Levy, and Fredrickson, Clinical Chemistry, 1972). Like the LDL calculation it's derived from, this estimate becomes unreliable when triglycerides exceed 400 mg/dL. Worked example: for triglycerides of 150 mg/dL: VLDL = 150 รท 5 = 30 mg/dL, which falls at the upper edge of the normal range, bordering on the borderline-high category.
