What is a US Cooking?

The US Cooking Measurement Converter converts between US cooking volume units โ€” cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces, pints, quarts, and gallons โ€” and metric units (millilitres and litres). It also converts between US customary and UK imperial cooking measures.

US recipe books, food blogs, and cooking videos dominate global culinary content, but the US culinary measurement system is unique: cups, tablespoons, and fluid ounces do not have direct equivalents in the metric system used in India and most of the world. An Indian cook following a US recipe that calls for "2 cups of flour" or "3/4 cup of butter" needs to know the metric equivalent to measure accurately.

Supported units:

  • Metric: millilitre (ml), litre (L)
  • US Customary: teaspoon (tsp), tablespoon (tbsp), fluid ounce (fl oz), cup, pint (pt), quart (qt), gallon (gal)
  • UK Imperial: teaspoon, tablespoon, cup, pint

All conversions use exact or internationally agreed values. For the general-purpose volume converter covering all volume units including cubic measurements, see the Volume Converter. For the general cooking measurements converter, see the Cooking Measurement Converter.

All calculations are client-side. No data is transmitted.

How to use this US Cooking calculator

  1. Select the FROM unit โ€” choose the unit from the recipe (e.g. cup US).
  2. Enter the quantity โ€” type the recipe amount (e.g. 2.5 for 2ยฝ cups).
  3. Select the TO unit โ€” choose your target (e.g. ml or litre).
  4. Read the result โ€” the converted value appears instantly.
  5. Use the swap button (โ‡…) to reverse the conversion direction.
  6. Reference table โ€” see all unit equivalents simultaneously.

Formula & Methodology

All units convert through millilitres (ml) as the base unit using exact multiplication factors:

| Unit | ml equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1 US teaspoon | 4.92892 ml |
| 1 US tablespoon | 14.7868 ml (= 3 tsp) |
| 1 US fluid ounce | 29.5735 ml (= 2 tbsp) |
| 1 US cup | 236.588 ml (= 8 fl oz) |
| 1 US pint | 473.176 ml (= 2 cups) |
| 1 US quart | 946.353 ml (= 2 pints) |
| 1 US gallon | 3785.41 ml (= 4 quarts) |
| 1 UK teaspoon | 5.91939 ml |
| 1 UK tablespoon | 17.7582 ml |
| 1 UK cup | 284.131 ml |
| 1 UK pint | 568.261 ml |

Common reference table:

| US recipe unit | ml (approx) | Indian equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 1 teaspoon | 5 ml | 1 tsp measure |
| 1 tablespoon | 15 ml | 1 tbsp measure |
| ยผ cup | 59 ml | ~4 tbsp |
| โ…“ cup | 79 ml | ~5 tbsp + 1 tsp |
| ยฝ cup | 118 ml | ~8 tbsp |
| 1 cup | 237 ml | ~240 ml Indian cup |
| 1 pint | 473 ml | ~500 ml |
| 1 quart | 946 ml | ~1 litre |

Frequently Asked Questions

A US cup is 236.588 ml (8 US fluid ounces). A UK cup is 284.131 ml (10 UK fluid ounces), based on the imperial pint of 568 ml. If you are following a US recipe in India or the UK with a metric measuring jug, use 240 ml as a practical approximation for 1 US cup โ€” the 1.5% difference from the exact value is negligible for most cooking. Many Indian metric cups are also 240 ml.
There are 16 US tablespoons in 1 US cup (or 48 US teaspoons). The US tablespoon is 14.787 ml and the US teaspoon is 4.929 ml. Three teaspoons equal one tablespoon. These measurements are standardised by the FDA: the US tablespoon used in food labelling is exactly 15 ml (a slight rounding from the culinary tablespoon of 14.787 ml).
A US fluid ounce is 29.574 ml. There are 8 US fluid ounces in 1 US cup and 16 US fluid ounces in 1 US pint. The UK fluid ounce is slightly different at 28.413 ml. Fluid ounces measure volume (liquids), not weight โ€” a US fluid ounce of water weighs about 29.6 grams, but a fluid ounce of oil or honey will weigh differently because of their different densities.
Yes โ€” cups, tablespoons, and teaspoons are volume measurements and can be used for both liquids and dry ingredients measured by volume (flour, sugar, oats). However, 1 cup of flour does not weigh the same as 1 cup of water or 1 cup of sugar โ€” different ingredients have different densities. For precise baking, use weight measurements (grams or ounces) rather than volume. This converter handles volume only.
The primary differences are the cup and pint sizes. A US cup is 240 ml (rounded) while a UK cup is 284 ml. A US pint is 473 ml; a UK pint is 568 ml. US tablespoons and teaspoons are effectively the same as UK tablespoons and teaspoons (15 ml and 5 ml respectively as rounded values). When adapting US recipes in the UK, the cup difference matters most โ€” always verify which standard a recipe uses.
Indian recipes traditionally use weight (grams, kilograms) or volume (litres, ml) in metric units. For everyday cooking, Indians commonly use a 200โ€“250 ml cup measure and 15 ml tablespoon / 5 ml teaspoon. Most Indian kitchen measuring sets use metric ml values. The US cup (236 ml) is close enough to a 240 ml Indian measure for most practical recipes โ€” the small difference rarely affects the outcome.
No โ€” all calculations run entirely in your browser. No values are sent to any server, stored, or logged. The tool works offline once loaded.
Select the unit you are converting from in the FROM dropdown (e.g. cups), enter the quantity, and select the target unit in the TO dropdown (e.g. ml). The converted value appears instantly. Use the swap button (โ‡…) to reverse the direction. The reference table shows all unit equivalents simultaneously.
A US quart is 946 ml (2 US pints). A US gallon is 3,785 ml (4 US quarts or 8 US pints). These units appear in US recipes for large-batch cooking, canning, and beverage preparation. In everyday US home cooking, cups and fluid ounces are most common; pints and quarts appear in larger-batch recipes like soups, stocks, and baked goods made in quantity.
The exact US teaspoon is 4.92892 ml. The rounded approximation used in most cooking is 5 ml โ€” and most metric measuring sets round to 5 ml. For everyday cooking, the 5 ml approximation is sufficient. For pharmaceutical and scientific use, the exact value (4.929 ml) matters. The US FDA uses exactly 5 ml as the standard teaspoon for medicine labelling.
