What is a Speed?

The Speed Converter converts between the standard units of speed used across road transport, aviation, maritime navigation, and scientific measurement. Speed is the rate at which an object moves — the distance covered per unit of time — and different industries have adopted different units based on historical convention and practical need.

The six units covered by this converter span all major domains:

  • km/h (kilometres per hour) — the standard for road transport in India and most of the world (except the US, UK, and a few others)
  • mph (miles per hour) — used on roads in the United States, United Kingdom, and a handful of other countries
  • m/s (metres per second) — the SI base unit for speed, used in physics, engineering, and wind speed reporting
  • knot (kn) — one nautical mile per hour, the global standard for maritime and aviation navigation
  • ft/s (feet per second) — used in some engineering and ballistics contexts in the US
  • Mach — speed as a multiple of the speed of sound; used in aviation and aerospace

For Indian users, the most common need is km/h ↔ mph: checking international speed limits when driving abroad, understanding speedometers on imported vehicles, or following international sports coverage (Formula 1 often quotes speeds in both). Indian pilots and maritime navigators work with knots daily, making that conversion practically essential. Use the Length Converter when you need to work with the distances that accompany speed — converting kilometres to miles, or nautical miles to kilometres.

How to use this Speed calculator

  1. Select the FROM unit in the left panel dropdown — for example, choose "Kilometre per Hour (km/h)" for a speed in km/h.
  2. Select the TO unit in the right panel dropdown — for example, choose "Mile per Hour (mph)" to see the equivalent in mph.
  3. Enter your speed value in the input field on the left — the converted result updates instantly in the right panel.
  4. Use the ⇅ swap button between the two panels to reverse the conversion — useful when you want to convert mph back to km/h without reselecting units.
  5. Check the reference table below the panels to see your speed in all six units at once — m/s, km/h, mph, ft/s, knots, and Mach simultaneously.
  6. Interpret the result — for road use, compare your converted speed against the local speed limit; for aviation, compare the knot value against ATC clearances or aircraft speed references.

Formula & Methodology

Base unit: Metre per Second (m/s)

All conversions route through m/s. The formula is:

> Result = Input × (F_from ÷ F_to)

Where F_from and F_to are the m/s-equivalent factors for the source and target units.

Conversion factors (all exact or to 6 significant figures):

| Unit | Factor (m/s) | Derivation |
|---|---|---|
| Metre per Second (m/s) | 1 | Base unit |
| Kilometre per Hour (km/h) | 0.277778 | = 1,000 ÷ 3,600 |
| Mile per Hour (mph) | 0.44704 | = 1,609.344 ÷ 3,600 (exact) |
| Foot per Second (ft/s) | 0.3048 | = 0.3048 m/ft (exact) |
| Knot (kn) | 0.514444 | = 1,852 ÷ 3,600 |
| Mach (sea level, 15°C) | 340.29 | ISA standard atmosphere |

Note on Mach: The speed of sound varies with air temperature and pressure. 340.29 m/s is the ISA (International Standard Atmosphere) value at sea level and 15°C. At cruise altitude (11,000 m, −56.5°C), the speed of sound drops to approximately 295 m/s — so Mach 0.85 at altitude equals about 251 m/s (903 km/h), not 289 m/s.

Worked example — Indian context:

An Indian driver is on the Autobahn in Germany, where a recommended speed of 130 km/h is posted on some sections. What is this in mph and m/s?

- 130 km/h → mph: 130 × (0.277778 ÷ 0.44704) = 130 × 0.621371 = 80.78 mph
- 130 km/h → m/s: 130 × (0.277778 ÷ 1) = 36.11 m/s

Common speed reference values:

| Speed | km/h | mph | m/s | Knots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brisk walking | 5 | 3.1 | 1.4 | 2.7 |
| City cycling | 20 | 12.4 | 5.6 | 10.8 |
| Indian highway limit | 100 | 62.1 | 27.8 | 54.0 |
| High-speed train (Vande Bharat) | 160 | 99.4 | 44.4 | 86.4 |
| Commercial jet cruise | 900 | 559.2 | 250.0 | 486.0 |
| Speed of sound (sea level) | 1,225 | 761.2 | 340.3 | 661.5 |
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Speed Converter?
A Speed Converter is a tool that converts between different units of speed — the rate at which an object covers distance over time. Common units include kilometres per hour (km/h), miles per hour (mph), metres per second (m/s), knots (kn), feet per second (ft/s), and Mach. These units are used across different domains: road transport uses km/h or mph, aviation uses knots and Mach, and physics uses m/s as the SI standard unit.
What is the formula for converting km/h to mph?
To convert km/h to mph, multiply by 0.621371: mph = km/h × 0.621371. For example, 100 km/h × 0.621371 = 62.14 mph. The conversion factor comes from the ratio of one kilometre (1,000 m) to one mile (1,609.344 m): 1 km/h = 1,000 ÷ 1,609.344 ÷ 1 ≈ 0.621371 mph. To convert mph back to km/h, multiply by 1.60934.
What is the difference between km/h and m/s?
Kilometres per hour (km/h) measures how many kilometres an object travels in one hour, while metres per second (m/s) measures how many metres it travels in one second. Since 1 km = 1,000 m and 1 hour = 3,600 seconds, the conversion is: 1 km/h = 1,000 ÷ 3,600 = 0.277778 m/s. Conversely, 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h. Road speeds in India are quoted in km/h, while scientific and engineering calculations use m/s.
What is Mach speed, and how is it calculated?
Mach is a dimensionless unit expressing speed as a multiple of the speed of sound. Mach 1 equals the speed of sound, which at sea level and 15°C (ISA standard atmosphere) is approximately 340.29 m/s or 1,225 km/h. Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound, approximately 2,450 km/h. The speed of sound varies with temperature and altitude — at 35,000 feet (cruise altitude for commercial aircraft), it is closer to 295 m/s (1,062 km/h), so Mach 0.85 at altitude equals about 903 km/h.
What is a knot, and how does it relate to km/h?
A knot is a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour. One nautical mile is defined as 1,852 metres, so 1 knot = 1,852 ÷ 3,600 = 0.514444 m/s, or approximately 1.852 km/h. Knots are the standard unit for maritime and aviation navigation worldwide, including at Indian airports and ports. To convert knots to km/h, multiply by 1.852; to convert km/h to knots, divide by 1.852.
How do I convert km/h to mph?
Divide the km/h value by 1.60934, or multiply by 0.621371. For example: 120 km/h ÷ 1.60934 = 74.56 mph. On the Speed Converter, select 'Kilometre per Hour (km/h)' in the FROM field and 'Mile per Hour (mph)' in the TO field, enter your value, and the result updates instantly. This is the most common conversion for Indian travellers driving or checking speed limits abroad.
How do I convert mph to km/h?
Multiply the mph value by 1.60934. For example: 60 mph × 1.60934 = 96.56 km/h. A useful approximation is to multiply by 1.6, giving 96 km/h for 60 mph — close enough for most practical purposes. On the Speed Converter, select 'Mile per Hour (mph)' as FROM and 'Kilometre per Hour (km/h)' as TO, then use the ⇅ swap button if you need to reverse the direction.
How do I use the Speed Converter?
Select the unit you are converting from in the FROM field — for example, 'Kilometre per Hour (km/h)'. Select the target unit in the TO field — for example, 'Mile per Hour (mph)'. Enter your speed value in the input box, and the result appears instantly without pressing any button. Use the ⇅ swap button to reverse the conversion. The reference table below the panels displays your value simultaneously in all six units — m/s, km/h, mph, ft/s, knots, and Mach.
What speed unit does India use on roads?
India uses kilometres per hour (km/h) as the official speed unit on all road signs, speedometers, and traffic regulations, as mandated by the Motor Vehicles Act and consistent with the metric system adopted nationally. All vehicles sold in India have speedometers calibrated in km/h. Some older or imported vehicles may show both km/h and mph on dual-scale speedometers, which is where the Speed Converter becomes useful for quick reference.
What are the standard speed limits in India?
Under the Motor Vehicles Act (amended 2019), standard speed limits in India are: 50 km/h in urban areas for cars; 80 km/h on national and state highways for cars; 100–120 km/h on expressways for cars (varies by expressway). Buses and trucks have lower limits — typically 60 km/h on highways. Speed limits are enforced via speed cameras on major expressways like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Yamuna Expressway, and NH48 Delhi-Jaipur corridor.
What is 100 km/h in mph?
100 km/h equals approximately 62.14 mph (100 × 0.621371 = 62.14). This is a common reference point: 100 km/h is the typical highway speed limit in India and translates to just over 62 mph. In the United States and United Kingdom, highway speed limits range from 55 to 70 mph (88.5 to 112.7 km/h). Knowing this conversion helps Indian travellers calibrate to road signs when driving abroad.
What is 60 mph in km/h?
60 mph equals approximately 96.56 km/h (60 × 1.60934 = 96.56). A quick mental approximation is to multiply by 1.6: 60 × 1.6 = 96 km/h — accurate to within 0.6%. This is a practical speed for Indian travellers in the UK, where 60 mph is the national speed limit on single-carriageway roads, or the US, where many state highways have 55–60 mph limits.
