What is a GPA?
A GPA scale converter lets you translate a grade point average between the three most common academic grading systems: the US 4.0 GPA scale, the Indian 10.0 CGPA scale, and percentage marks. Whether you are an Indian student applying to US universities, an employer evaluating transcripts from different educational systems, or a student comparing grades across semesters graded on different scales, this converter gives you the equivalent value instantly.
The 4.0 GPA scale is the standard at nearly all US universities. A 4.0 is a perfect grade, 3.0 is a B average, and 2.0 is typically the minimum for academic standing. The 10.0 CGPA scale is used by most Indian universities affiliated with boards such as CBSE, AICTE, and many state universities. A CGPA of 10.0 is a perfect score and 7.0โ7.5 is generally considered good academic standing.
Percentage marks โ the traditional Indian grading format โ remain the most universally understood format across Indian schools, competitive exams, and government recruitment. Many job applications and government service applications still require percentage marks, even when the university issued grades as CGPA.
Converting between these three systems requires a linear approximation because the relationship between letter grades, percentage marks, and GPA points is not universally standardised. The converter uses the widely accepted formulas: GPA (4.0) = Percentage ร 0.04 and CGPA (10.0) = GPA (4.0) รท 0.4. These are useful for general comparison but should be treated as approximations when used for official admissions or HR decisions.
How to use this GPA calculator
- Select the From scale โ choose whether you are starting from a GPA (4.0), CGPA (10.0), or Percentage.
- Select the To scale โ choose the scale you want to convert into.
- Enter your grade value in the input field. The converter accepts decimal values (e.g. 8.6, 3.45, 78.5).
- The converted value updates instantly.
- Use the swap button (โ ) to reverse the conversion direction.
Formula & Methodology
All three scales are related through simple linear conversion: | Conversion | Formula | |---|---| | Percentage โ GPA (4.0) | GPA = Percentage ร 0.04 | | GPA (4.0) โ Percentage | Percentage = GPA ร 25 | | CGPA (10.0) โ GPA (4.0) | GPA = CGPA ร 0.4 | | GPA (4.0) โ CGPA (10.0) | CGPA = GPA รท 0.4 | | Percentage โ CGPA (10.0) | CGPA = Percentage รท 10 | | CGPA (10.0) โ Percentage | Percentage = CGPA ร 10 | The base unit is GPA (4.0). All conversions go through this base internally. Reference table: | Percentage | CGPA (10.0) | GPA (4.0) | Grade | |---|---|---|---| | 90โ100% | 9.0โ10.0 | 3.6โ4.0 | Outstanding | | 80โ89% | 8.0โ8.9 | 3.2โ3.56 | Excellent | | 75โ79% | 7.5โ7.9 | 3.0โ3.16 | First Class | | 60โ74% | 6.0โ7.4 | 2.4โ2.96 | Second Class | | 50โ59% | 5.0โ5.9 | 2.0โ2.36 | Pass | Note: These conversions are standard linear approximations. Different universities and institutions may apply their own grading tables that deviate from these values. Always refer to your institution's official conversion policy for formal academic submissions.
