UAN
GeneralUniversal Account Number
A 12-digit number issued by India's EPFO that stays with you across employers, linking all your Provident Fund accounts under one umbrella number for life.
Definition
UAN is the single 12-digit identifier the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) assigns to every salaried employee in India, and it doesn't change no matter how many employers you work for over your career. Each new job gets its own member ID under your EPF account, but they all link back to the same UAN.
Before UAN existed, switching jobs meant either withdrawing your Provident Fund or navigating a paper-heavy transfer process. Now, UAN lets you view all your linked accounts, request transfers, and withdraw funds from one portal. The EPF Calculator uses your contribution history, which UAN keeps consolidated, to project your retirement corpus.
Formula
There's no calculation involved, UAN is an identifier, not a numeric quantity to compute.
Key Things to Know
- Issued once, used for life. Your UAN doesn't reset or change when you move employers, only your member ID under it does.
- Activation unlocks the online portal. You need to activate your UAN with your mobile number and basic KYC details before you can use online transfer or withdrawal services.
- Aadhaar linking is now mandatory. EPFO requires UAN-Aadhaar linkage for most online transactions, including withdrawals and transfers.
- One UAN covers multiple member IDs. If you've worked at four companies, you likely have four member IDs, but only one UAN tying them together.
- KYC updates need to be done once per UAN. Update your bank details or address once against your UAN rather than separately for each employer's records.
