A numerology number calculated by summing the Pythagorean values of every letter in a person's full birth name, believed to represent their natural talents and life purpose.

Definition

The Destiny Number — also known as the Expression Number — is a numerology number calculated from every letter in a person's full birth name. It's believed to represent someone's natural talents, core abilities, and the broad purpose or direction their life is suited toward, distinct from the Life Path Number, which is calculated from a birth date instead of a name.

Like other core numerology numbers, the Destiny Number is produced by converting letters to numbers using the Pythagorean system and reducing the total sum to a single digit — unless that sum lands on a Master Number (11, 22, or 33), in which case it's preserved rather than reduced further.

Formula

Step 1 — Convert every letter of the full name to its Pythagorean value:

Step 2 — Sum all the letter values, including every letter in every part of the full name (first, middle, and last).

Step 3 — Reduce the total by repeatedly summing its digits until a single digit remains, unless the sum is 11, 22, or 33 (kept as a Master Number).

Worked Example

For the name "John Smith":

  • J=1, O=6, H=8, N=5 → J-O-H-N sums to 1+6+8+5 = 20
  • S=1, M=4, I=9, T=2, H=8 → S-M-I-T-H sums to 1+4+9+2+8 = 24
  • Total: 20 + 24 = 44 → 4 + 4 = 8
