What is a Tip?

A tip calculator is a quick arithmetic tool that computes the gratuity amount on a restaurant bill, delivery order, or any service, and then splits the total among a group. While the maths is simple — multiply the bill by the tip percentage and divide by the number of diners — doing it mentally at the table after a meal, especially across multiple people, invites rounding errors and awkward negotiations.

Tipping customs in India differ significantly from Western norms. Unlike the United States, where servers depend on tips as a primary source of income, Indian hospitality workers generally receive a basic wage, making tipping an appreciated but not obligatory practice. That said, tipping culture is growing, particularly in metropolitan restaurants, luxury hotels, food delivery, and cab services. Understanding when, how much, and how to split a tip has become increasingly relevant for urban Indian diners.

The Tip Calculator on thecalcu.com covers three scenarios: solo dining (where you need only the tip amount and total), group dining (where equal bill splitting is the goal), and delivery or service tips (where a fixed rupee amount is more common than a percentage). You can use preset buttons for the most common percentages — 10%, 15%, 18%, and 20% — or enter a custom value.

If you're managing a tighter budget, pairing the Budget Calculator with the Tip Calculator helps you factor dining and tipping costs into your monthly spend.

How to use this Tip calculator

  1. Enter your Bill Amount — type in the total from your restaurant bill or invoice, before any tip. Include service charges if they are already in the total and you do not plan to add extra gratuity on top.
  2. Set the Tip Percentage — use one of the quick preset buttons (5%, 10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) or type a custom percentage in the input field. A 15% tip is a broadly recognised standard for good restaurant service in India.
  3. Set the Number of People — drag the slider or type the number of diners who are splitting the bill equally. Set it to 1 if you are dining alone.
  4. Read the results — the Tip Amount and Total Amount show the absolute rupee values for the whole table. The Tip Per Person and Total Per Person show what each individual owes. Use these to collect cash from the group or decide on a card split.

Formula & Methodology

The tip calculator uses simple proportional arithmetic:

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100)

Total Amount = Bill Amount + Tip Amount

Per Person Tip = Tip Amount ÷ Number of People

Per Person Total = Total Amount ÷ Number of People

Worked example: A group of 4 friends dines at a restaurant in Mumbai. The bill comes to ₹3,600. They decide on a 15% tip.

- Tip Amount = 3,600 × (15 ÷ 100) = ₹540
- Total Amount = 3,600 + 540 = ₹4,140
- Per Person Tip = 540 ÷ 4 = ₹135
- Per Person Total = 4,140 ÷ 4 = ₹1,035

Each person pays ₹1,035, which in practice they might round to ₹1,050 for convenience.

The calculator assumes equal splitting. It does not account for scenarios where one person ordered more — for unequal splits, calculate each person's share of the food separately and apply the same tip percentage to each sub-total.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fair tip percentage in India?
Tipping norms in India are more relaxed than in Western countries, but a 10–15% tip is considered generous at sit-down restaurants. At upscale restaurants or for exceptional service, 15–20% is appropriate. For takeaway or quick-service outlets, a small rounding-up or ₹20–₹50 is common.
How does the Tip Calculator split a bill between multiple people?
The calculator divides the total tip equally among the number of people you enter. It then adds each person's share of the tip to their share of the original bill to give a per-person total. This assumes the bill is split evenly — if shares are unequal, use the per-person tip as a guideline and adjust manually.
Is service charge the same as a tip?
No — a service charge is a mandatory levy added by a restaurant, whereas a tip is a voluntary gratuity you choose to give. In India, many restaurants add a 5–10% service charge automatically. If a service charge is already included, you are not obliged to tip additionally, though you may choose to for excellent service.
What is the formula for calculating tip amount?
Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100). The total amount is Tip Amount + Bill Amount. When splitting among N people, Per Person Tip = Tip Amount ÷ N and Per Person Total = Total Amount ÷ N.
How do I use the Tip Calculator?
Enter your bill amount, select or type a tip percentage, and set the number of people. The calculator instantly shows the tip amount, total bill, tip per person, and total per person. You can use the quick preset buttons for standard percentages like 10%, 15%, 18%, or 20%.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
In India, GST is typically shown separately on the bill, so most people tip on the food and beverage subtotal before tax. Internationally, convention varies — in the US, tipping on the post-tax total is common. The Tip Calculator lets you enter either amount depending on your preference.
How much tip should I leave for a ₹2,000 restaurant bill?
A 10% tip would be ₹200, making the total ₹2,200. At 15%, the tip is ₹300 and total is ₹2,300. For excellent service, a 20% tip adds ₹400. If you are splitting this among 4 people, each person pays ₹550 at a 10% tip or ₹575 at a 15% tip.
What tip percentage should I give for food delivery in India?
For food delivery aggregators like Swiggy or Zomato, a tip of ₹20–₹50 per order is appreciated and goes directly to the delivery partner. For high-value orders or during bad weather, ₹50–₹100 is a thoughtful gesture. Delivery platform apps often suggest a tip amount during checkout.
Can the Tip Calculator handle odd bill amounts?
Yes — you can enter any bill amount, including fractional rupees. The calculator rounds the final per-person amounts to the nearest paisa. Since exact change can be inconvenient, you may want to round up to the nearest ₹10 or ₹50 in practice.
What is an appropriate tip for hotel staff in India?
For hotel bellboys and room service, ₹50–₹100 per interaction is common in business or luxury hotels. For housekeeping staff in a multi-day stay, ₹100–₹200 per day left at checkout is considerate. In budget hotels, ₹20–₹50 is adequate. Tipping spa or salon staff at hotels follows restaurant norms of 10–15%.
How do restaurants in India calculate service charge?
Indian restaurants typically add 5–10% as a service charge on the food and beverage total. Under Indian consumer protection guidelines, this charge should be voluntary and prominently disclosed. If a service charge is already included in your bill, use the Tip Calculator with your pre-service-charge subtotal to decide whether additional gratuity is appropriate.
