Formula & Methodology

The tip calculator uses simple proportional arithmetic:

Tip Amount = Bill Amount × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100)

Total Amount = Bill Amount + Tip Amount

Per Person Tip = Tip Amount ÷ Number of People

Per Person Total = Total Amount ÷ Number of People

Worked example: A group of 4 friends dines at a restaurant in Mumbai. The bill comes to ₹3,600. They decide on a 15% tip.

- Tip Amount = 3,600 × (15 ÷ 100) = ₹540
- Total Amount = 3,600 + 540 = ₹4,140
- Per Person Tip = 540 ÷ 4 = ₹135
- Per Person Total = 4,140 ÷ 4 = ₹1,035

Each person pays ₹1,035, which in practice they might round to ₹1,050 for convenience.

The calculator assumes equal splitting. It does not account for scenarios where one person ordered more — for unequal splits, calculate each person's share of the food separately and apply the same tip percentage to each sub-total.
