Thinset Calculator
ConstructionCalculate how many 50 lb bags of thinset mortar you need to set tile. Enter tile area, trowel coverage rate, and wastage to get the exact bag count.
Bags Needed
What is a Thinset?
A thinset calculator estimates how many bags of thinset mortar are needed to set tile over a given floor or wall area, based on the coverage rate of your trowel size and a wastage allowance for real-world application loss. Thinset is a cement-based adhesive that bonds tile to the substrate, and its coverage rate per bag varies substantially depending on notch size, tile format, and how flat the underlying surface is. Underestimating thinset can halt a tiling job mid-installation, while overestimating ties up cash in unused bags that harden once opened.
This tool takes your total tile area, expected trowel coverage per bag, and a wastage percentage to output a precise bag count. It works well alongside the Grout Calculator for finishing joints after the tile is set, and the Tile Calculator for determining how many tiles you need in the first place.
How to use this Thinset calculator
- Enter your total Tile Area in square feet โ the full area to be tiled, not a single tile's dimensions.
- Set Trowel Coverage per Bag based on your notch size and tile format; check the thinset bag's coverage chart for the manufacturer's recommended rate.
- Adjust the Wastage percentage upward if your layout includes intricate cuts, patterns, or large format tile that requires back-buttering.
- Review the Bags Needed result to know exactly how many bags to purchase.
- Check Adjusted Area if you want to compare bag counts across different trowel sizes before finalizing your order.
- Round up your final purchase slightly if the job involves an uneven or unlevel substrate, which typically increases real-world thinset usage.
Formula & Methodology
The calculator applies a wastage allowance to your raw tile area, then divides by trowel coverage rate: Adjusted area (sq ft) = Tile area ร (1 + Wastage % รท 100) Bags needed = ceiling(Adjusted area รท Trowel coverage per bag) Worked example: For a 200 sq ft floor with a 50 sq ft per bag coverage rate and 10% wastage: Adjusted area = 200 ร (1 + 0.10) = 220 sq ft. Bags needed = ceiling(220 รท 50) = ceiling(4.4) = 5 bags.
