What is a Military Time?
The Military Time Converter translates between the familiar 12-hour clock (with AM and PM) and 24-hour military time, the format used by the armed forces, aviation, healthcare, and logistics industries worldwide. In 12-hour time, "3:00" could mean either 3 AM or 3 PM โ a small ambiguity that becomes a real risk in scheduling contexts where getting it wrong has consequences. Military time removes that ambiguity entirely by running the clock from 0000 (midnight) straight through to 2359 (one minute before the next midnight), with no repeating hour numbers.
Enter an hour, minute, and AM/PM value and this tool instantly returns the four-digit military time equivalent, along with how it would be spoken aloud. If you need to work across time zones as well as time formats, the Timezone Converter handles that separately.

Formula & Methodology
Military time uses the same clock as 12-hour time but numbers the hours 00 through 23 instead of cycling 1 through 12 twice: - 12 AM (midnight) โ00hours - 1 AM โ 11 AM โ hour value stays the same (01โ11) - 12 PM (noon) โ12hours (hour value stays the same โ this is the one PM hour that does not add 12) - 1 PM โ 11 PM โ add 12 to the hour (13โ23) The full military time is the two-digit hour followed directly by the two-digit minute, with no separator:HHMM. Worked example โ converting 9:30 PM to military time: Since 9 PM falls in the "1 PMโ11 PM" range, add 12: 9 + 12 = 21. Combined with the minute (30), the result is 2130, spoken as "twenty-one thirty hours."
