Key Things to Know
- Thresholds differ by population, not just by individual variation. The South Asian-adjusted cutoff exists because research links lower BMI levels to elevated metabolic risk in this population specifically.
- BMI can't distinguish fat from muscle. A muscular athlete can register a BMI in the obese range despite having low body fat, a well-known limitation of the metric.
- Fat distribution matters as much as total amount. Visceral (abdominal) fat carries more metabolic risk than fat stored elsewhere, which is why waist circumference is often checked alongside BMI.
- Sarcopenic obesity can hide behind a normal BMI. Muscle loss combined with fat gain can keep total weight, and BMI, in the normal range while still carrying real health risk.
- Obesity is a risk factor, not a certainty of disease. Individual metabolic health varies, some people with elevated BMI show few metabolic risk markers, though this doesn't eliminate longer-term risk.
