Definition
Blood Alcohol Content (BAC), also called Blood Alcohol Concentration, is a measure of the amount of alcohol in a person's bloodstream. It is expressed as a percentage by weight โ the grams of alcohol per 100 millilitres (or per decilitre) of blood.
BAC is the scientific standard used globally for:
- Determining legal impairment for driving (legal limits range from 0.00% to 0.08% depending on country)
- Medical assessment of intoxication in emergency settings
- Forensic and legal proceedings
- Personal awareness of alcohol consumption and its effects

Where:
- A = Number of standard drinks consumed (1 standard drink = 14g pure alcohol in the US)
- W = Body weight in pounds
- r = Body water constant (0.73 for men, 0.66 for women)
- T = Hours since drinking began
- 5.14 = Conversion factor (grams per standard drink / dL conversion)
For metric units:
BAC (%) = (A ร 0.806 ร 1.2) / (BW ร r) โ 0.015 ร T
Where BW is body weight in kg.
Worked Example
A 75kg (165 lb) male drinks 4 standard drinks over 2 hours.
- A = 4, W = 165 lbs, r = 0.73, T = 2
- BAC = (4 ร 5.14) / (165 ร 0.73) โ (0.015 ร 2)
- BAC = 20.56 / 120.45 โ 0.03
- BAC = 0.1707 โ 0.03 = ~0.14%
