Weekly PPE Waste (g)
What is a COVID Waste?
The COVID-19 Waste Calculator quantifies the plastic and single-use waste generated by pandemic-related personal protective equipment (PPE) — specifically disposable masks, gloves, rapid antigen test kits, and vaccine syringes. Enter your daily habits and household size, and the calculator converts these into weekly, monthly, and annual waste totals in grams. The result is a concrete, personal figure that makes the scale of pandemic-associated plastic waste tangible rather than abstract.
Global estimates suggest the COVID-19 pandemic added hundreds of thousands of tonnes of single-use plastic to the waste stream in just its first few years. This calculator helps individuals understand their share of that figure and identify which PPE habits contribute most to their household's total.
How to use this COVID Waste calculator
- Set "Masks per Day" using the slider to reflect how many disposable masks your household uses daily, per person. If you have already switched to reusable cloth masks, set this to 0.
- Set "Gloves per Day (pairs)" to the number of disposable glove pairs used per person daily. For most household settings this will be 0; healthcare or caregiving contexts may be higher.
- Set "Test Kits per Week" to reflect how many rapid antigen tests your household runs each week on average. During peak infection periods this may be several per week; during low-transmission periods, 0 is typical.
- Enter "Total Vaccine Shots (lifetime)" — the total number of COVID-19 vaccine doses your household has received across all individuals. The calculator amortises this syringe waste across 52 weeks to produce a weekly contribution.
- Set "People in Household" to the number of people in your home. All per-person inputs are multiplied by this figure to give you a household-level total. Read the highlighted Weekly PPE Waste figure, then review monthly and annual totals to understand the full scope.
Formula & Methodology
The calculator uses per-item plastic weights drawn from published lifecycle assessments and waste characterisation studies of disposable medical PPE. Per-item plastic weights: - Disposable mask: 3 g per mask - Disposable glove pair: 4 g per pair - Rapid antigen test kit: 25 g per kit - Vaccine syringe (amortised): 3 g per shot, spread over 52 weeks Weekly waste per person: > Weekly Waste (g) = (masksPerDay × 7 × 3) + (glovesPerDay × 7 × 4) + (testKitsPerWeek × 25) + ((vaccineShots × 3) ÷ 52) Household weekly waste: > Weekly Household Waste (g) = Weekly Waste per person × peopleInHousehold Monthly waste: > Monthly Waste (g) = Weekly Household Waste × 52 ÷ 12 Annual waste: > Annual Waste (g) = Weekly Household Waste × 52 Worked example: A household of three people, each wearing 1 mask per day, 0 gloves, 1 test kit per week, and 4 vaccine shots total. - Mask waste per week: 1 × 7 × 3 = 21 g per person - Test kit waste per week: 1 × 25 = 25 g per person - Vaccine syringe (weekly, amortised): (4 × 3) ÷ 52 ≈ 0.23 g per person - Total per person per week: 21 + 25 + 0.23 ≈ 46.2 g - Household weekly waste: 46.2 × 3 = 138.7 g - Annual waste: 138.7 × 52 ≈ 7,212 g (7.2 kg) This 7.2 kg is entirely non-recyclable plastic — underscoring why switching to cloth masks and reducing glove use in household settings is one of the most effective individual actions available.
